Ten Things to Know about Debt Collectors
1. Debt collectors can exaggerate when they talk to you! They can make things seem worse for you to encourage (and scare) you to pay! They just want your money.
2. They are not your friend, no matter how friendly they may seem over the phone. They just want your money.
3. Don’t worry about telling them all the events that have led to this problem in your life. They don’t care. They just want your money.
4. They just want your money because they get a percentage of what you pay –it is how they get paid.
5. They will play on your guilt for not paying your bills. They just want your money.
6. They probably are collecting on a debt that has been bought. If your debt was $10,000, they may have bought if $500.00. So there is room to negotiate with them. They win if they can collect $2000.00 and you win if you don’t have to pay back the full $10,000. They just want your money.
7. If they play nice with you, and their boss happens to notice, he could very easily force the debt collector to change the deal he is offering you.
8. If your debt is past the statue of limitations for your state, then the state cannot, nor the debt collector, sue you in court. They cannot garnish your wages either. However, it will still on your credit report.
9. Sometimes you can find a lawyer to talk to for free for advice. Don’t believe everything the debt collector tells you. They just want your money.
10. Don’t let them make you think that you can go to jail for not paying your bills. Unless it is child support or some other payment you have been ordered by court to pay, this isn’t true.
